49ers QB1 Brock Purdy Takes Blame After Loss to Jaguars: "I Didn't Play Well"
San Francisco, September 29, 2025
The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars 21-26 in Week 4 of the NFL 2025 season. The game marked the return of Brock Purdy after missing two weeks due to a toe injury, but instead of being the hero, the 49ers’ QB1 found himself at the center of criticism for an inconsistent performance.
Purdy completed 22/38 passes for a total of 309 yards, recording 2 touchdowns but also committing 2 interceptions and a fumble that resulted in a turnover. These mistakes directly contributed to the 49ers’ inability to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, despite several explosive offensive plays. After the game, Purdy didn’t shy away from taking responsibility.
“I didn’t play well, and those missed throws, those turnovers, are on me. As a quarterback, you have to set the tempo for the entire team, and I didn’t do that today. I need to be more accurate, more decisive, and I can’t afford to make mistakes in critical moments,” Purdy shared in the press room.
Purdy’s performance raised questions about his form post-injury. In the first half, he only achieved a completion rate of about 52%, threw an interception, and appeared hesitant under pressure from the Jaguars’ defense. Despite some impressive deep passes to Stefon Diggs and Hunter Henry, his inconsistency and turnovers overshadowed the overall effort.
Analysts note that the 49ers can’t place all the blame on Purdy, as the offense also suffered from multiple drops and the defense allowed the Jaguars to capitalize on opportunities. However, QB1’s candid self-criticism reflects the leadership needed, even when his performance fell short of expectations.
This loss drops the 49ers to 3-1, but with Purdy back in action, the team hopes he can quickly regain his confidence to steer the offense in the right direction in the weeks ahead.
