After Returning to Practice Post-ACL Surgery, 49ers' Defensive Star Expresses Burning Desire to Take the Field for San Francisco
Santa Clara, California – October 9, 2025
After nearly nine months of relentless recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, Malik Mustapha, the young defensive star of the San Francisco 49ers, has finally returned to the practice field in an emotional atmosphere at the Santa Clara training facility. His presence is not only significant for the team’s performance but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration for the entire squad as the 49ers aim to maintain their lead in the NFC West heading into the mid-season stretch.

Mustapha – a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft – made a strong impression during his rookie season, recording 32 tackles and 1 interception, contributing to the 49ers’ ironclad defense. However, a severe injury in January forced him to undergo surgery and sidelined him for nine months. Now, the 23-year-old has returned to full practice, brimming with energy and determination.
In a post-practice interview, Malik Mustapha couldn’t hide his emotions as he donned the 49ers’ red-and-gold uniform once again:
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for nine months. There were days when all I wanted was to hold the ball, hear the hits, and feel the roar of the crowd,” he shared. “The 49ers are my family. I want to take the field, fight for my teammates, for Coach Saleh, and for everyone who believed in me throughout this recovery.”
He added, with a trembling yet resolute voice:
“I’m not afraid of pain. I’m only afraid of not giving my all for this team. I’ve done everything to stand here today – and I promise, when I’m back, I’ll play with the heart of a true Niner.”
According to Head Coach Robert Saleh, Mustapha’s physical condition is “very promising,” and the team may activate him to the active roster within the next two weeks.
Malik Mustapha’s return is not just a boost for San Francisco’s defense but also an inspiring story of resilience and love for the game. With his fiery spirit, 49ers fans have every reason to believe that – when Malik steps back onto the field, the red-and-gold flame at Levi’s Stadium will burn brighter than ever.
