After Shining with Washington, Former 49ers Star Sends Gratitude to Old Team: “ San Francisco will always be in my heart”
Washington, October 8, 2025 –
Just months after leaving the San Francisco 49ers, Deebo Samuel is carving out an impressive new chapter in his career with the Washington Commanders. From a player once doubted, Samuel has quickly proven his elite status with an explosive start to the season, becoming an indispensable part of head coach Dan Quinn’s offensive system.

In last weekend’s 27–10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, Samuel recorded 8 receptions for 96 yards and 1 touchdown, helping the Commanders improve their record to 3–2. This marked his fourth touchdown of the season—matching his total from his final season with the 49ers.
Yet, despite his success, Deebo remains deeply respectful of his former team, the one that brought him into the NFL and transformed him into a star. In a post-game interview, Samuel spoke with emotion:
“I know a lot of people say I left because of disagreements, but the truth is I’ll always carry gratitude in my heart. I learned so much with the 49ers—about work ethic, fighting spirit, and what it means to be part of a team. San Francisco will always be in my heart.”
Samuel also praised his former teammates like George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk, calling them “true warriors” and expressing his hope to face the 49ers in the playoffs:
“If fate sets it up for me to meet them again, I’ll give it my all—but always with the utmost respect.”
Though now wearing the Commanders’ jersey, Deebo Samuel continues to leave a lasting mark on 49ers fans—not only for his powerful bursts on the field but also for his grateful heart, resilience, and rare honesty in the modern era of football.
