When Poirier, a Lafayette native and lifelong Saints fan, heard that Gleason wanted to meet him, he didn’t hesitate. He walked across the Caesars Superdome to find the former Saints safety — a man whose courage and resilience have inspired millions.
In the short video posted by the @Saints official account, Poirier can be seen sitting beside Gleason, smiling and posing for photos. Gleason, who continues to battle ALS with unmatched strength, greeted Poirier warmly as the caption on screen read: “Two Louisiana Legends.” The crowd around them erupted with cheers and applause.
After their meeting, Poirier shared a few heartfelt words with the media:
“Steve’s story means everything to Louisiana. Seeing his fight, his positivity — that’s real inspiration. It reminds me what true strength looks like.”
The Lafayette-born fighter also spoke about what the moment meant to him personally:
“I grew up watching the Saints. Guys like Steve showed us what it means to never give up — not just in sports, but in life. To finally meet him and bump heads with him in respect — that’s something I’ll carry with me forever.”
“When I looked at him, I didn’t see weakness. I saw purpose, I saw power. That man still leads, still inspires, and that’s the kind of energy I want to bring into my own fight — inside and outside the cage.”
The video quickly went viral, with fans flooding the comments with hearts and fleur-de-lis emojis. It was a brief exchange, but one that captured everything Louisiana stands for — faith, resilience, and family.
Because in New Orleans, heroes come in many forms — and on this day, two of them found each other.
