Brock Purdy Still Sidelined by Toe Injury, Mac Jones Ready to Extend 49ers' Winning Streak
San Francisco, October 9, 2025
The San Francisco 49ers are facing a new challenge as their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, remains unable to return due to a toe injury that has kept him out for three consecutive games. Despite this, the atmosphere in California remains brimming with confidence, as Mac Jones continues to prove himself a reliable option under head coach Kyle Shanahan.

According to the team’s official report, Purdy has not participated in practice this week, and Shanahan confirmed he is “not yet considering placing Purdy on the injured reserve list.” However, this means Mac Jones is likely to start again in Week 6 during the team’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Despite dealing with a left knee and intercostal muscle injury, Jones has been practicing on a limited basis and displaying an exceptionally professional competitive spirit. In the last three games filling in for Purdy, he has led the 49ers to a perfectწ
System: perfect 3-0 record, including a thrilling 26-23 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams, where he threw for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan couldn’t hide his emotions when discussing the situation with his two quarterbacks:
“It’s tough to see Brock sidelined. He’s a huge part of this team, and we all want him back soon. But at the same time, I’m thrilled to see how Mac has stepped up and led this team,” Shanahan shared. “He’s been grinding in practice, always showing up early. I see a champion’s mentality in Mac – and I’m completely satisfied with that.”
Currently, Jones has recorded 905 yards, 6 touchdowns, and just 1 interception, with a 66.7% completion rate – impressive numbers for a quarterback who faced doubts during his final days with the Patriots. Under Shanahan’s guidance, Jones is rediscovering his Pro Bowl form and helping the 49ers maintain their lead in the NFC West (3-0).
If he continues this performance, Mac Jones may not just be a temporary replacement – he could become a pivotal factor in the San Francisco 49ers’ journey back to the top.
