Cowboys TE 2nd in the NFL Manages to Avoid NFL Punishment After Thanksgiving Celebration

Arlington, Texas – In a week full of scrutiny and frustration, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson managed to escape NFL discipline for his viral Thanksgiving celebration — a rare bright spot as he navigates one of the most difficult stretches of his young career.

Ferguson jumped into the iconic Salvation Army Red Kettle at AT&T Stadium after what was initially ruled a third-quarter touchdown during Dallas’ 31-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The score was overturned upon review — he tapped one foot twice but failed to establish both feet inbounds — but many expected the league to still issue a penalty for using a prop during a celebration.

Instead, the NFL chose not to fine him.

League commissioner Roger Goodell clarified the decision in a statement on Saturday, explaining why Ferguson avoided punishment despite the high-profile nature of the celebration. “After review, the league determined that his celebration, while creative and spirited, did not cross the line into unsportsmanlike conduct or prop usage that warrants a fine. We encourage players to celebrate responsibly and will continue to evaluate these situations on a case-by-case basis.”

For Ferguson, it’s a small relief at the end of a brutal week.

During Thursday night’s 44–30 loss to the Detroit Lions, the tight end endured one of the roughest games of his career. He lost a fumble in the first half that directly led to a Detroit touchdown. Later, he was called for a hands-to-the-face penalty that erased a potential first-and-goal opportunity from the 2-yard line. In the fourth quarter, another drive stalled after he was flagged for offensive pass interference in the end zone — a call that Dallas argued was questionable.

More concerning for Dallas is the growing trend of fumbles. After going his first 35 career games without a single one, Ferguson has now put the ball on the ground seven times in his last 25 contests — an issue that has dimmed what could otherwise be a standout season.

On paper, Ferguson has remained one of the most productive tight ends in the league. He ranks second among NFL tight ends with 75 receptions and seven touchdowns, pairing those numbers with 554 receiving yards. But until the Cowboys start winning consistently, his individual production won’t be enough to elevate him into the league’s top tier.

The loss to Detroit dropped Dallas to 6-6-1, snapping a three-game winning streak and leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. As of Sunday morning, NFL.com estimates their postseason chances at just 6% entering a critical Week 15 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

Ferguson avoided a fine this week — but not the expectations. If the Cowboys are going to keep their season alive, they’ll need their tight end to bounce back quickly and play clean, efficient football down the stretch.
