Eagles Rookie Andrew Mukuba Shares Emotional Thanks to Teammate After Fractured Ankle as QB Left Postgame Press Conference to Visit Him in the Hospital
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Today
Philadelphia Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba endured one of the most frightening moments of Week 12 when he suffered a fractured ankle in the final seconds of a 24–21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But what moved him most didn’t happen during the play that caused the injury—it happened later that night inside a Philadelphia hospital, where Jalen Hurts arrived after abruptly leaving his postgame press conference to be by his teammate’s side.
The injury occurred with less than a minute remaining, as the Eagles desperately tried to stop the Cowboys from completing a full comeback after erasing a 21–0 deficit. On a 24-yard reception by George Pickens from Dak Prescott, Mukuba closed in for the tackle as Sydney Brown flew in to assist. Their combined impact caused Mukuba’s right ankle to twist violently beneath him, sending him to the ground in immediate pain.

Before the injury, Mukuba had recorded three tackles and continued what had been one of the most impressive rookie seasons in the league: 46 tackles, two interceptions, and a memorable pick-six that sealed the win over the Chiefs in Week 2. After the game, he was seen leaving the locker room on crutches with a protective boot on his right leg.
According to team sources, Hurts stunned reporters when he stepped away from the podium mid-session, offering no explanation before exiting the room. Minutes later, he arrived at the hospital where Mukuba was preparing for initial surgical stabilization. When Mukuba awoke after the procedure, the first thing he saw was his quarterback waiting beside his bed.
Through the Eagles’ PR staff, Mukuba shared a heartfelt message of gratitude:
“After the surgery ended, I saw him standing there waiting for me, and in that moment I realized friendship is bigger than any win. I want to apologize on his behalf for leaving the press conference to come here with me. Moments like this remind me that being part of the Eagles isn’t just about playing football — it’s about showing real care for each other.”
On November 26, the Eagles officially placed Mukuba on Injured Reserve (IR), ruling him out for at least four weeks — and likely the remainder of the season depending on his post-surgery recovery timeline. The injury further strains a secondary already dealing with adversity: Reed Blankenship suffered a thigh injury in the same game, and Adoree’ Jackson remains in concussion protocol.
Philadelphia is expected to lean on Sydney Brown, elevate Michael Carter II from his slot role, or activate additional depth from the practice squad for their upcoming Black Friday matchup against the Chicago Bears.
While the loss to Dallas was difficult, the moment at the hospital underscored the deeper bonds inside the Eagles’ locker room. As one veteran told ESPN: “We fight together — but more importantly, we look out for each other.”
Mukuba will remain under medical observation before beginning what is expected to be a challenging recovery. Eagles fans across the country are sending their support as he faces the toughest chapter of his rookie season.
