Ex-Head Coach slams Matt LaFleur after embarrassing losses and tie
The Green Bay Packers’ rocky start to the season has drawn plenty of criticism from fans and analysts, but the harshest words may have come from a familiar voice. Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, who led the franchise to its last Super Bowl title, has spoken out against current head coach Matt LaFleur, questioning his leadership and ability to get the team back to championship form.
For years, Packers fans have wondered if LaFleur could deliver the Lombardi Trophy. Since taking over in 2019, he’s produced strong regular-season records, but the team continues to fall short when it matters most. Now, with back-to-back frustrating results – a sloppy loss followed by a stunning tie against the Cowboys in Week 4 – McCarthy has decided enough is enough.
Speaking candidly, McCarthy didn’t hold back in his assessment. “The number of blocked kicks in an entire season is usually fewer than the number of teams in the NFL, but in just two weeks the Packers managed to pull it off. I honestly don’t know what he’s doing with that team. He’s got a roster loaded with talent, one of the top championship contenders, but he’s turning it into a circus. The problem isn’t the players. The problem is the head coach.”
The comments cut deep, especially coming from a coach who brought a Super Bowl title to Lambeau Field and knows firsthand what it takes to succeed in Green Bay. McCarthy, now with the Dallas Cowboys, has faced his fair share of criticism over the years, but his words carry weight given his history with the Packers and his intimate knowledge of the franchise’s culture.
LaFleur’s defenders argue that special teams miscues, not coaching schemes, were responsible for the recent failures. Others point to the league’s unpredictability, noting that blocked kicks have been up across the NFL this year. Still, there’s no denying the optics are bad – two games in a row marred by glaring errors, and a coach who seems unable to fix the problem.
The bigger issue, critics say, is that LaFleur has not capitalized on having a star-studded roster. Quarterback Jordan Love has shown flashes, the defense is stacked with playmakers, and the offensive skill positions boast both youth and experience. Yet Green Bay continues to stumble in critical moments, fueling the perception that leadership at the top is lacking.
For McCarthy, it’s not personal – it’s about standards. The Packers are a franchise defined by championships, and until LaFleur delivers one, criticism like this will only get louder. Green Bay remains a playoff contender, but if mistakes pile up, McCarthy’s words may look less like a jab and more like a warning.
