Ex-Packers Cut by Patriots From Practice Squad After 2 Weeks, Pleads for Packers Reunion
Green Bay, October 8, 2025
Royce Newman, the former Green Bay Packers guard, is facing a harsh reality in the NFL's cutthroat landscape. Just two weeks after signing to the New England Patriots' practice squad on September 24, Newman was released on Tuesday as the team added running back Jashaun Corbin to the unit. The move marks Newman's second release in little more than a month, leaving the 28-year-old veteran searching for his next opportunity.
Newman, a fourth-round pick by the Packers in 2021, spent his first three seasons in Green Bay but saw his playing time dwindle amid struggles in pass protection. According to Pro Football Focus, he logged 1,084 snaps as a rookie with a 55.7 overall grade, allowing 32 pressures and six sacks. His snaps dropped to 451 in 2022 and 186 in 2023, with 28 pressures and five sacks across those seasons, prompting his release in 2024.
After a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (three offensive snaps), Newman signed with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason but was cut during final roster trims. He joined the Patriots hoping for stability, but his limited role and the team's depth chart needs led to another quick exit.
In a heartfelt plea shared on social media, Newman expressed his longing to return to Green Bay: "I never thought I'd be in this spot, but if the Packers have an opening, I'd give anything to come back. Green Bay is home—my second family. I'd take a pay cut, whatever it takes. The green and gold means everything."
Newman's Packers tenure was marked by early promise but later frustration, as injuries and inconsistencies hampered his development. Still, at 28, his experience could provide depth for Green Bay's injury-plagued offensive line, with Zach Tom and Aaron Banks sidelined.
Packers fans have rallied behind Newman on X, with @PackersFaith tweeting, "Royce deserves another shot! Bring him home!" Head coach Matt LaFleur has not commented, but the team's current line woes—Jordan Morgan's penalties and Darian Kinnard's adjustment—leave room for a familiar face.
As the 3-1 Packers enter their bye week, Newman's emotional call adds a human touch to the roster grind. Will Green Bay open the door for their former lineman, or will Newman find stability elsewhere?
