Former Saints legend Drew Brees defends his longtime partner Michael Thomas: “My receiver is #1” – An emotional tribute to his former teammate, with the Instagram post going viral and racking up millions of views ⚜️💫
New Orleans, October 9, 2025
Former New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees has once again moved the NFL community, publicly honoring his former teammate Michael Thomas and reminding everyone that his record-setting legacy deserves to be remembered forever.
On his Instagram account, Brees shared a graphic from FOX Sports listing the Top 10 NFL players with the most single-season receptions in history. Among names like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, Brees added a simple yet powerful caption:
“My receiver is #1.”
The post instantly went viral, amassing millions of views and thousands of comments — a testament to how much Saints fans and NFL followers still cherish the iconic duo that once lit up the Superdome.
In 2019, Michael Thomas set an NFL record with 149 receptions in just 16 games — a feat no one has broken, even after the league expanded the season to 17 games. Cooper Kupp came close in 2021 with 145 receptions, while current Rams receiver Puka Nacua is off to a hot start with 52 catches through five weeks, potentially on pace to challenge Thomas’ record, according to @NextGenStats.
But for Brees, numbers only tell part of the story.
“That record isn’t just about stats,” Brees said. “It’s about heart, work ethic, and what Michael brought to every single game. Every catch, every yard — it was about lifting the team, not himself.”
The post also reignited memories of a complicated chapter in the Saints’ history. After battling multiple injuries and personal issues following Brees’ retirement, Thomas and the team mutually agreed to part ways, ending what was once one of the most dynamic QB–WR partnerships in NFL history.
Yet, Brees’ gesture proved one thing — that respect, loyalty, and brotherhood never fade.
“I don’t care how many years go by,” Brees added later in an interview. “When I think of greatness in a Saints uniform, I think of Mike. He gave everything — even when he had nothing left to give. To me, he’ll always be #1.”
Even though Thomas hasn’t returned to the NFL since their separation, Brees’ heartfelt words have reignited the admiration fans still hold for one of the greatest receivers in franchise history.
⚜️ “Drew Brees refuses to let his receiver’s legacy fade — because for him, Michael Thomas will forever be #1 in Saints history.”
