Former New Orleans Saints linebacker and franchise legend Jonathan Vilma has broken his silence following the team’s disappointing skid under first-year head coach Kellen Moore. Speaking on ESPN, Vilma didn’t hold back, claiming the Saints are “wasting Spencer Rattler’s talent every single day” by forcing the rookie quarterback to “fight alone in a confusing and uninspired system.”
“He’s got the potential to be one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the NFL, but the way the Saints are running their offense really frustrates me,” Vilma said. “You can’t expect a 25-year-old kid to carry an entire team when the offense lacks balance, the play-calling is predictable, and the defense keeps giving up touchdowns right out of the gate.”
Rattler impressed in the Saints’ 25–19 loss to the New England Patriots, completing 20 of 26 passes for 227 yards and recording four “big-time throws,” according to PFF. Still, his efforts were overshadowed by the team’s lack of creativity and consistency.
Vilma, who captained the Saints’ defense during their Super Bowl XLIV championship run, believes Rattler deserves far better support from the coaching staff.
“He could be the foundation for the Saints’ future if they put him in the right system. But if this team keeps playing slow, uninspired football and fails to maximize his strengths, he’s going to lose faith sooner or later.”
According to Vilma, the Saints’ problem isn’t effort—it’s structure. Their offensive design feels outdated and lacks in-game adaptability. He ended his remarks with a pointed message to Moore:
“If you want to build a winning team, start by empowering Rattler. Don’t suffocate him with an old-school playbook—let him play on instinct. The Saints have waited far too long to have a quarterback like this.”
With Vilma’s public backing, pressure is now mounting on the Saints’ coaching staff, who are increasingly being criticized for failing to unlock the potential of their most promising young star.
