🔥 Locker Room Tension? Red Sox Star Rafael Devers Calls Out Sonny Gray After His Yankees Comments
Boston, Massachusetts – December 3, 2025
Rafael Devers isn’t one to stir controversy—but when it comes to loyalty and respect, the Red Sox slugger didn’t hold back. Just days after Sonny Gray made headlines for slamming his former team, the New York Yankees, Devers delivered a pointed response that’s now echoing through the Boston locker room.
Gray, who was recently traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Boston Red Sox, made waves during his first media session by saying he “never wanted to go [to New York] in the first place” and “feels good to finally be on a team where it’s easy to hate the Yankees.”
That didn’t sit well with Devers.
“Anyone who forgets where they came from doesn’t deserve respect,” Devers told reporters Tuesday afternoon. “I don’t care if you liked it there or not. If you wore that jersey and they gave you a shot, you owe them at least some respect.”
Devers emphasized that while Red Sox-Yankees is one of the fiercest rivalries in sports, “trying to win over a fanbase by trashing the past is not how we do things in this clubhouse.”
“We play hard for this city. We fight for this uniform. But I’ve never seen anyone win respect by tearing down the team that helped start their career,” he added.
Sonny Gray’s time with the Yankees was rocky—posting a 4.51 ERA in 41 appearances. He struggled to meet expectations and was traded after just one full season. But his recent comments, seen by many as disrespectful and self-serving, have now created early friction in his new home.
Sources inside the Red Sox organization say several players were “not thrilled” with Gray’s remarks, feeling they painted the wrong tone for a fresh start in Boston. Manager Alex Cora has not publicly addressed the issue but is expected to speak with Gray privately.
For Devers, the message is clear: “Be proud of where you are—but don’t forget who helped you get here.”
