New England Patriots Lose Promising Linebacker to Rival New York Jets Mid-2025 NFL Season
Foxborough, September 24, 2025
The New England Patriots have just suffered a regrettable loss in their defensive lineup as Mark Robinson, a 26-year-old promising linebacker, was signed by the New York Jets from the practice squad. This move came immediately after the Jets lost star Quincy Williams to a shoulder injury, urgently needing a replacement at the linebacker position.
Robinson, originally selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 7th round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has appeared in 38 games over his first three seasons. After being cut by the Steelers in late August, he quickly signed with the Patriots and participated in all three opening games of the 2025 season, primarily on special teams, with 37 snaps and three tackles. However, he has yet to have significant opportunities to showcase himself as a primary linebacker.
Speaking after joining the Jets, Robinson shared heartfelt words:
“I deeply love the Patriots; they gave me a chance to continue my career. But I need to play more, I want to compete, to prove that I can make a difference for a defense. I don’t want to just stay on special teams.”
This departure leaves the Patriots without an important and potential backup piece. Meanwhile, the Jets gain a young player eager to prove himself, ready to fill the void left by Quincy Williams. For Robinson, this could be a turning point, offering him more real playing time – something he struggled to find with the Patriots, where the defense is already stacked with experienced names.
With the decision to “poach” Robinson from the Patriots, the Jets not only promptly address their roster gap but also indirectly cause their AFC East rival to lose a promising talent. This story is sure to be revisited multiple times during the season when the two teams face off.
