New Orleans, Louisiana – October 23, 2025
Despite ongoing debates within the NFL community about the power and influence of team owners, Gayle Benson – owner of the New Orleans Saints and governor of the New Orleans Pelicans – has been named by Forbes as the “Most Powerful Woman in American Sports” for 2025.

According to Forbes, the recognition is not solely based on wealth or status but reflects Benson’s real impact on two of the biggest sports leagues in the United States – the NFL and the NBA. At 78 years old, Benson remains the only woman in American professional sports history to own both an NFL and an NBA franchise. Since the passing of her husband, Tom Benson, in 2018, she has steadily transformed New Orleans into a thriving center of sports and culture with influence that extends far beyond U.S. borders.
Still, the honor hasn’t come without controversy. Some Saints fans argue that the team’s struggles this season – starting 1–6 under head coach Kellen Moore – make the recognition feel “out of touch with reality.” Others, however, believe Benson’s influence and long-term vision far outweigh short-term performance on the field.
Forbes highlighted, “Gayle Benson made history by turning the Saints into the first NFL franchise with marketing rights in France, leading the league’s global expansion efforts.” She was also instrumental in bringing Super Bowl LIX (2026) back to New Orleans – an event expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the city.
“I’ve never considered myself a powerful person,” Benson said in a brief interview. “I just do what I believe is right for this team, for this city, and for the fans who’ve stood by us for decades.”
“I know there are many people out there who question how I got here,” she said , “but they don’t know the whole story — what it took, what it cost, and why I’ll never apologize for it.”
“I know there are many people out there who don’t give me credit,” she added, “but I don’t do this for praise. I do it out of love for New Orleans – because I believe this team represents the city’s unbreakable spirit.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised her, saying: “In business, philanthropy, and football, Gayle Benson is a true leader – always putting New Orleans first.”
“If there’s anything I’m proud of,” Benson continued, “it’s seeing New Orleans recognized not just for its music or cuisine, but for the fighting spirit of the Saints.”
Despite all the debate, there’s no denying that Gayle Benson is writing a remarkable new chapter in American sports history – one where strength, resilience, and vision have redefined what it means to lead an entire city.
