NFL Fines Lions’ Kerby Joseph for Criticizing League Officials and Insulting Patrick Mahomes
After reviewing the controversy that followed the matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL has officially issued disciplinary action against Kerby Joseph, the Lions’ safety, for publicly criticizing referees and insulting Patrick Mahomes on social media.
The incident began when Joseph posted an image of Mahomes talking to a referee, paired with mocking emojis — implying that the Chiefs’ quarterback received preferential treatment from officials. The post quickly went viral, sparking backlash across the league and prompting an internal NFL review.

According to a league statement, Joseph’s actions violated the NFL’s Player Conduct Policy, which strictly prohibits players from publicly undermining referees or disparaging other athletes in a manner that questions the integrity of the game.
In an official press release, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the decision directly, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and respect:
“We encourage fierce competition, but it must always come with respect. Referees are an essential part of our game, and publicly criticizing them — or insulting fellow players — is something we cannot tolerate. The integrity of the NFL depends on discipline, respect, and accountability, both on and off the field.”
The Detroit Lions have not yet issued an official response, while representatives from the Kansas City Chiefs stated that Mahomes only wanted the matter handled fairly and within the rules.

Following a two-day internal review, the NFL concluded its investigation and announced the penalty against Joseph — a fine of $11,593, marking one of the league’s first disciplinary actions this season for unsportsmanlike conduct on social media.
The message from the league is clear: whether on the field or online, respect remains the unspoken rule every NFL player is expected to uphold.
