The Green Bay Packers have restructured the contract of veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard, freeing up $6.5 million in cap space to bolster their roster amid a challenging injury-riddled start to the 2025 season. The move, confirmed by multiple sources, comes as the Packers navigate the absence of key contributors like Jayden Reed and Christian Watson, positioning the team for potential midseason acquisitions.
Lazard, who spent his first four NFL seasons with Green Bay before signing with the New York Jets in 2022, returns to Lambeau Field on a restructured deal that includes performance incentives and void years. The adjustment converts portions of his base salary into bonuses, providing immediate relief to the Packers' salary cap while rewarding on-field production.
"This restructuring gives us flexibility to build depth where we need it most," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said. "Allen has always been a Packers guy at heart, and his willingness to step up shows the kind of character we value here."
The Packers, sitting at 2-0 after wins over the Lions and Commanders, face a thin wide receiver room with Reed sidelined by a fractured collarbone (6-8 weeks) and Watson on the PUP list. Lazard's return adds reliability, with his familiarity in Matt LaFleur's scheme allowing for seamless integration as a red-zone threat and blocker.
Financially, the $6.5 million savings could fund a trade for a defensive lineman or extend a rookie contract, aligning with Green Bay's aggressive offseason moves like acquiring Micah Parsons. Lazard, now 29, expressed enthusiasm: "Green Bay is home. I'm excited to contribute and help this team chase another Lombardi."
As the Packers prepare for Week 3 against the Browns, Lazard's restructured deal signals a commitment to contention. With cap space unlocked, Green Bay eyes the trade deadline, ready to reinforce their Super Bowl aspirations.
