Saints Coach Kellen Moore Calls for NFL to Intensify CTE Research Following Pro Bowl Star Rudi Johnson’s Tragedy
New Orleans, September 24, 2025
Shock of Rudi Johnson’s Passing
The death of former Pro Bowl running back Rudi Johnson, once an icon of the Cincinnati Bengals, has sent shockwaves through the NFL community. According to information from the Miami-Dade County police, Johnson, aged 45, likely passed away due to suicide. The incident has raised serious concerns about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a condition linked to repeated head trauma, believed to affect many former players.
Moore’s Heartfelt Condolences and Concerns
During a press conference following practice, New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore expressed profound sorrow and extended deep condolences to Johnson’s family. However, he did not hide his concern:
“We are truly stunned to hear about Rudi. He was an outstanding player, a model of resilience. But this heartbreaking story forces all of us to think more seriously about the long-term effects football has on players’ brains. CTE is no longer a distant concept. It is a reality, and the NFL needs to do more to protect them.”
Call for Action from the NFL
Moore further emphasized:
“The Saints have always prided themselves on their fighting spirit, but above all, we want our players to leave the field safe and healthy. This must be a wake-up call for the entire league to act – more research, prevention, and support for those who have dedicated their youth to the NFL.”
Urgent Need for Player Health Protection
Rudi Johnson’s tragedy not only leaves the Bengals and fans in grief but also places the NFL before an urgent demand: to protect the mental and physical health of players – both current and future.
