Saints Consider Selecting Coach's Son as Future QB for New Orleans
New Orleans, September 25, 2025
After a disappointing 0-3 start to the season, the New Orleans Saints are facing a major question at the quarterback position. Rookie Spencer Rattler, who was highly anticipated, has played steadily in the first three weeks but hasn't convinced everyone that he's the long-term solution. In this context, many experts are starting to mention the name Garrett Nussmeier, the talented QB from LSU – who is also the son of the Saints' current offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier.
According to CBS Sports predictions, the Saints could use their 2026 first-round pick to draft Garrett. In theory, this is a reasonable choice: Garrett is emerging as one of the most promising QBs in the NCAA, with accurate passing and resilience in high-pressure situations. Moreover, he attends LSU, the school right in the heart of Louisiana – creating a special connection with the Saints fan community.
But it's precisely this father-son relationship that makes the scenario more dramatic than ever. Would the Saints dare to bet on Garrett when his father is directly in the coaching staff? The fit could quickly turn into accusations of "blatant favoritism" if the team doesn't succeed.
Garrett Nussmeier doesn't shy away from this when asked:
“If one day I get to wear the Saints jersey, I'll give my all to prove my abilities. I want people to see me as a real player, not just the coach's son.”
This creates double pressure for both father and son. Doug Nussmeier will be scrutinized for every coaching decision, while Garrett could be doubted no matter how deserving he is of the QB1 spot. Success would turn the story into a "family miracle," but failure could make them symbols of misguided favoritism.
For the Saints, this is a time to weigh carefully: they need a future QB to stabilize after Derek Carr, but should that be the son of the coach currently working for the team?
