Saints Rising Star Kool-Aid McKinstry Reaches a Career Milestone — Named NFL’s “NFC Defensive Player of the Week” After a Truly Outstanding Performance⚜️🔥
New Orleans, October 9, 2025
The New Orleans Saints received a major boost this week as Kool-Aid McKinstry, the team’s promising young cornerback, was officially named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL — marking the first individual honor of his career after a standout performance in the 26–14 victory over the New York Giants in Week 5.
A second-round pick (41st overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft, McKinstry delivered a brilliant performance, recording two interceptions in back-to-back drives during the fourth quarter, completely shutting down any hopes of a Giants comeback. He also added three pass breakups and four tackles (three solo, one assist), anchoring a defensive effort that held New York to just 199 passing yards — one of the Saints’ most dominant showings of the season.
“He’s really special,” head coach Kellen Moore said after the game. “His speed, football IQ, and composure make him the future of our defense.”
Born in Pinson, Alabama, McKinstry was a standout at the University of Alabama, known for his lightning-quick reactions and aggressive press coverage. Now, in just his second NFL season, the 5'11”, 199-pound corner has proven himself to be a rising star in the Saints’ young and energetic defense.
According to NFL stats through Week 5, McKinstry has recorded:
-
20 total tackles (17 solo)
2 interceptions
4 pass breakups
This marks the first NFC Defensive Player of the Week award for any Saints player in 2025 — and the first defensive recognition for the team since 2023.
“It’s an honor to be recognized, but what matters most is the win,” McKinstry said after hearing the news. “I just give everything I’ve got for my teammates — this award belongs to the entire Saints defense.”
The young cornerback later shared more about what the honor means to him, reflecting on his growth and determination:
“Honestly, I’m just grateful,” McKinstry said with a big smile. “It’s surreal to hear my name mentioned with this kind of recognition — but at the end of the day, I didn’t do it alone. Every interception, every tackle, it’s all built on trust — trust in my teammates, in our coaches, and in the system.”
“When I stepped on the field that day, I told myself one thing: make every snap count. I wanted to be the difference-maker, not for the headlines, but for the guys fighting next to me. That’s what being a Saint is all about — playing with heart, discipline, and pride.”
“This award means a lot,” he continued. “But I’m hungrier than ever. One great game doesn’t define me — I want to keep proving that I belong among the best.” ⚜️🔥
With his breakout performance, Kool-Aid McKinstry is quickly establishing himself as one of the top young cornerbacks in the NFC, and a cornerstone piece in head coach Kellen Moore’s mission to reignite New Orleans’ season.
⚜️ From a promising rookie to a defensive star, Kool-Aid McKinstry is writing the first chapter of what could be a legendary journey with the New Orleans Saints.
