Four years ago, Spencer Rattler was the face of hope at Oklahoma — a confident, gifted quarterback expected to become the next college football star. But everything changed in a flash. In 2021, he was benched for a then-unknown freshman, Caleb Williams, and suddenly, the world around Rattler went quiet.

Now, fate has brought them back together — not in college colors, but under the brightest lights of the NFL, as the New Orleans Saints (1-5) prepare to face the Chicago Bears (3-2) in one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 7.
When asked about that difficult chapter during his pregame interview, Rattler paused for a long moment before answering:
“It was painful — a wound that took time to heal. But it also taught me the biggest lesson of my life. When something you love is taken away, you learn patience, and you learn to believe in yourself even when no one else does.”
“Back then, you were chosen to replace me. Today, I’m the one chosen to face you,” he said confidently. “On this field, there’s no past — only the present. And this present belongs to me.”
He smiled slightly, then added:
“Maybe fairness never existed for me at Oklahoma, but in New Orleans — I found it. I found a team that believes in me. And now, I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”
After leaving Oklahoma, Rattler transferred to South Carolina, where he started 25 games over two seasons (2022–2023). That stretch not only helped him rebuild his confidence but also sharpened his resilience, eventually leading to his selection by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft (150th overall) — a new door opening after years of quiet redemption.
Now, destiny puts him back across from Caleb Williams, the man whose rise changed his path forever. Williams, now the Bears’ franchise quarterback, is having a stellar season with 9 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and a drastically improved sack rate (down from 10.8% to 5.9%).
Meanwhile, Rattler has been quietly proving his own worth — 6 touchdowns, 1 interception, and a 5.1% sack rate, showing the growth of a player who refused to let the game forget his name.
Two careers — one built on opportunity, the other on perseverance — will now collide under the bright lights of Soldier Field, where destiny will decide whose story moves forward.
“I don’t think about the past anymore,” Rattler said. “I just want to step on that field and show what I’ve learned from every time I fell. Maybe fairness doesn’t always come early — sometimes it shows up only when you’ve earned the strength to wait for it.”
When Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler take the field in Saints vs. Bears, it won’t just be another game — it will be the next chapter in a story of pain, resilience, and redemption.
