With Mac Jones' excellent form, San Francisco QB1 may have to sit out the 49ers vs Jaguars match in Week 4 NFL
Santa Clara, September 24, 2025
The San Francisco 49ers face a “luxury problem” at quarterback as they head into their Week 4 NFL 2025 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While Brock Purdy remains the team’s highest-paid QB1 with a historic $265 million contract, Mac Jones’ recent brilliance has sparked questions: will Purdy return immediately upon recovery?
Purdy’s absence in two games due to a toe injury gave Jones a rare chance to shine. The former Patriots QB seized it, leading the 49ers to victories over the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3. His clutch two-minute drive to secure the winning score against the Cardinals showcased his composure under pressure.
Jones’ stats are electrifying for a backup: 66.3% pass completion, 563 yards, 4 touchdowns, and just 1 interception, with a 98.1 rating. These numbers exceed expectations, fueling media debates that any signal-caller could thrive under coach Kyle Shanahan’s guidance.
In a recent post-practice interview, Jones remained humble:
“I just do my job. If the opportunity comes, I will take it and give it my all. As for who plays, that is the coach's decision. All I can do is stay ready, play my best and show that I can help the team win.”
Meanwhile, Purdy, the 49ers’ “leading figure,” finds himself under pressure. A subpar game upon return could invite comparisons to Jones’ steady performances.
Purdy’s status for the Jaguars game remains uncertain. If he’s not at 100%, Shanahan may stick with Jones, though this doesn’t mean Purdy’s QB1 spot is at risk—yet the pressure is mounting.
Fortunately, the 49ers’ offense is regaining strength. Demarcus Robinson is back from suspension, George Kittle is slated for a Week 6 return, and Brandon Aiyuk is nearing a comeback. Still, the burning question remains: who will lead the offense in Week 4—Purdy or Jones?
