Yankees Urged to Pursue Trade for $340 Million Outfielder
The New York Yankees are beginning to heat up their offseason activity, and several recent moves suggest a busy winter is coming. In the span of a week, New York has re-signed Trent Grisham, Clarke Schmidt, and Oswaldo Cabrera while continuing to explore upgrades across the roster. With financial flexibility and pressure to return to championship form, the Yankees are expected to be players in both free agency and the trade market.
According to longtime Yankees insider Michael Kay, one name should be near the top of their target list: San Diego Padres superstar outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Kay believes the Yankees should make a “serious push” to acquire the $340 million phenom this offseason, arguing that his age, skill set, and star power fit everything New York is looking for.
While the Yankees have significant resources to spend in free agency, their plans could change depending on what happens with Cody Bellinger. Both sides have expressed interest in a reunion, but with Bellinger hitting the open market, another team could easily outbid New York. If that happens, replacing him externally becomes far more complicated.
That’s where the trade market — and Tatis — enter the equation. Despite coming off another All-Star season in 2025, where he hit .268 with 25 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases, Tatis has still been at the center of trade speculation. The Padres could listen on offers depending on their long-term payroll goals, making the 26-year-old a potentially available superstar.
Bellinger’s return would almost certainly close the door on a Tatis pursuit. But if he departs, New York’s front office could pivot quickly to finding a long-term right-handed bat to pair with Aaron Judge in the outfield. As Kay explained on The Michael Kay Show, this could be the moment for the Yankees to strike.
“What did the Yankees need this year? They needed a right-handed bat,” Kay said. “Fernando Tatis is 26 years old … I would make a phone call to A.J. Preller. ‘What do you need? What do you want? We’ve got a deep farm system. This is the type of player who would play huge in New York.’ If I’m the Yankees, and the bidding for Bellinger gets over $30 million, I might have to tap out. That’s when I make my pivot to Fernando Tatis Jr.”
The Yankees’ offseason is still in its early stages, but the pressure to add star talent is real — and with Bellinger uncertain, the path toward Tatis may be clearer than it seems.
